School Curriculum
Our religious school?s mission is to provide our students with a warm environment and a comprehensive Jewish Education. The school offers a curriculum that stresses a strong foundation in Jewish History, Israel, the observance of the Jewish rituals, customs, ceremonies, and Modern Hebrew as well Hebrew prayer skills that enable them to be comfortable with the conservative prayer book. Our school offers a program for children of pre-kindergarten age through 10th grade. Students below 3rd grade attend only on Sunday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, while those in the third through seventh grades are required to attend Sunday mornings from 9:00 am to 12:20 pm, as well as Wednesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. The Confirmation Classes from 8th through 10th grade meet only once, on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Parental involvement is strongly encouraged: it is only with the parent?s help, participation, and encouragement that our children will embrace with joy our teachings. Through drama, story telling, crafts and songs, children in the primary grades (pre-K to 2nd grade) are introduced to Bible stories, Israel and Mitzvot. They experience the classroom as a model Jewish home where they give Tzedakah, celebrate Shabbat, and discover the rituals and customs of our Jewish Holidays. They learn about the synagogue by visiting he sanctuary, dressing the Torah, and participating in children?s services. In a playful, entertaining setting, they begin developing a basic Hebrew Vocabulary while recognizing their Alef Bet. As they progress, by the 2nd grade, they begin reading and writing basic words incursive Hebrew. In the middle grades (3rd to 7th grades), our students learn about Jewish wisdom in action: they connect the Jewish values they discover through stories and biblical texts to their daily life; they understand the role they can play in the community. They not only celebrate holidays in the classroom but understand their meaning, and learn the main prayers. They travel through time to discover about Jewish History from Abraham to our present time, in Israel and in the Diaspora. They learn about significant Jews in History and explore which of these ?heroes? can serve as role models. By 7th grade, they will know more about our past to be able to better understand the present. In Hebrew, our 3rd graders improve their reading, their writing skills and build up their vocabulary as they discover Modern Hebrew stories. As they go to upper levels, they continue enriching their vocabulary and grammar to be not only able to have basic conversation skills but mostly to be comfortable with the Conservative prayer book. The can sing and understand the meaning of prayers read during Shabbat services, and by 7th grade, they can LEAD Friday night and Saturday morning services as well as chanting Torah readings. They will be able to improve their conversational Hebrew by using computer programs.
